When I first started working from home the only problem I had was that my home office resembled a child’s nursery with a battered old laptop in it.

That is probably because that’s exactly what it was. The only place I could find to work from was my little girl’s old room, and my old computer had definitely seen better days long ago. I sat there with the laptop balanced on my knee and surrounded by Barney the dinosaur, a scary looking doll and assorted ducks as I tried to work. Needless to say, I soon found out that spending a bit of time and money on a good home office is worth it.

Find the Right Place

A nursery is no place to work from, and instead I found a nice corner of the kitchen where I could hook up to the internet and munch on yoghurts at the same time. Somewhere with plenty of light and fresh air is ideal and my kitchen fits the bill nicely as I can leave the patio door open when the sun comes out.

Get the Right Equipment

The laptop I used to use was no good at all for working with. It was slow, it crashed when I tried to do too many things on it once and it had no decent music on it. As I was just starting out as a home worker (do they still say telecommuter or does that make me sound old fashioned?) I was a bit worried about spending a lot of money on new machinery. The final straw came one day when the blooming thing didn’t boot up until 10 in the morning. Admittedly I had only switched it on at 10 to 10 but it was still far too long a wait for me. I got a shiny new desktop PC which promised to lead me down the technological highway (that’s another outdated phrase, is it?) at breakneck speed. I couldn’t believe how fast it was and how many games were pre-installed on it. Now my only problem is that I want to spend a bit of time each day poking around it to see what else it does.

Sort the Furniture

My spanking new PC sat on a wonky old table at first, with the speakers on the floor and the keyboard on my lap. My wife asked me why I didn’t buy a computer table at the same time and I honestly don’t know why I didn’t. I quickly got onto the task and before the week was out my computer was perched on a glass topped table with loads of shelves for my cartons of juice and a nice drawer to keep my biscuits in.

Protect Yourself

I had only ever used the internet for fun before; looking up football results, seeing what on Earth that Facebook malarkey was all about and helping my Mum find out what latest contagious disease she is apparently suffering from. Then one day my sister said to me that I should be wary of rookits, spyware and Trojan horses. When she told me that people could grab control of my computer and steal the money I had been working hard to build up I immediately panicked and started looking for all the protection I could find. Thankfully she told me that all I really needed was a good antivirus and that this would protect me against all of the current risks. As a home worker this is one of the most important things I have done and while it might be a less obvious improvement than some of the other ones it is nevertheless something which I am glad I did.

Re-tune the Focus in your Digital Age Home

It doesn't seem to matter how flat screen they get, whether they're HD and internet ready there is something about 'the box'; and it's not good.  Unless you're life revolves around the TV the simple fact is that these great big screens can dominate a room like nothing else.  You can spend thousands designing your perfect living space, that stylish reflection of your personal, unique taste.  Then there it is, looming large over everything else, overshadowing the tasteful antique Ming, the Van Gogh doesn't get a look in and as for the Kandinsky in the corner, well, that may as well go straight out of those picture windows.  OK, so we may not all have an art collection that's the envy of the National Gallery but however modest or cosy your living room is there's no escaping the big black hole that the TV carves in a room.  And that's the main reason they can be a design black hole; when they're off they're just a big blank screen punching a very noticeable hole at the center of the room.  So how do you 'design out' these technical details?

Old tricks

The none-too-dark-art of television design has been with us since they first found their way into our homes.  In fact early designers realized they were so out of place in homes of the 1930s and 40s that they came in big cabinets, usually wooden and with nice folding doors that could hide them away.  TVs blended in, sort of.  By the 1950s, TVs became common and they were something of a status symbol.  These days they are less prestigious as everyone has one, in most rooms and your laptop can perform pretty much the same function.  The interior design tricks to blend TVs have changed less than the TVs themselves.  The idea of containing them in a unit is still with us however, there are some new ideas that have developed alongside technological advances. 

Cheap and cheerful

The simplest way to hide your TV is in a fairly standard TV unit.  These can be purchased from all the usual suspects and help to frame the TV alongside other audio visual 'stuff'.  They work by splitting the focus in the room, creating an overall feature where no one appliance takes precedence.  You can incorporate the Ming vase or books and ornaments into the shelves of the units and minimize the effect of the TV.  As a cheap and cheerful budget solution they work well, although they don't make much of a statement about the individuality of your style and taste.  No Swedish names mentioned, but let’s face it, they get everywhere. 

Technical tricks

These days there are range of other options and they don't all cost the earth.  Cabinets that contain a mechanical 'lift' device are available that hide the TV away when not in use.  These cabinets come in a range of styles and designs which can fit various rooms.  Some take the form of a desk, which the TV magically appears from when needed.  Others are designed for bedrooms or living rooms.  There is a price attached, as with all things, and depending on the design and the mechanics involved the prices tend to be at the higher end of the market.  As a stylish solution to making a home out of a house, they work well. 

Hidden depths

Television frames are an old technique with some pleasant modern twists.  Framing your TV may seem like an odd way to make it less of a focal point; but that depends on the type of frame you use.  Manufacturers who make bespoke frames will offer a range of options, from luxury gold, museum quality frames to simple, modern stylish frames.  The clever bit comes with the addition of that Kandinsky when needed or the clever use of mirror glass to turn the TV into a useful, attractive and functional item when it's not in use.  Mirrored television frames are certainly one of the best, simplest and rather unique solutions.  They work well in any room and equally well in domestic properties, offices, showrooms and hotels.  Prices on this one vary, but for individual craftsman created pieces you may be surprised, pleasantly, at the competitive options available on the market.  As TVs get flatter by the week, the chances are that with the addition of television frames, they may finally blend into the background where they belong.

Finding ways to 'hide' TVs has been a problem for generations of designers.  Using simple television frames combined with mirror glass or traditional paintings can help to finally blend the TV into the background, in a stylish individual way.

The Apple iPod and its video Capability

The IPod has been here with us for quite some time now. Ever since its in November 10, 2001 release it has been a wonderful device to work with and play with it also. The iPod video became famous due to its huge memory and the capacity of playing video, due to its slim design and longer life battery. Still, there are voices that point out some disadvantages and highlight different negative aspects.

Discontinued models of the line include the iPod mini and the iPod photo, the former being replaced by the iPod nano, and the latter reintegrated into the main iPod line. In iOS versions prior to iOS 5, the iPod branding is also used for the media player applications included with the iPhone and iPod; the iPhone version is essentially a combination of the Music and Videos apps on the iPod touch.

As of iOS 5, separate apps named 'Music' and 'Video' is standardized across all iOS-powered products. While the iPhone and iPod have essentially the same media-player capabilities as the iPod line, they are generally treated as separate products.

The amazing features concern the sound quality – it is clearer and stronger with a bass that is stronger articulated, the sound is also louder than that of the previous generations. The other good features are the easy control, the video feature is classified with “great”, but the flaws regard the interruption of the sound between the tracks, being blanked out. There are still other suggestions regarding the battery life, taking into account the amount of music that the iPod video has.

    

The pros may be gathered together pointing out the thin and attractive enclosure with a great display, the best sound, 15-20 hours of music, new clock and the time in other parts of the world. The cons highlight the incompleteness of the video integration that suggests the experimental project aspect, absence of the new games, no changes in the interface, the smaller screen than expected especially for video features edition. Another disadvantage concerns the slow transfer of photos direct from the camera.

Some critics point out the fact that the design and the features of the iPod video may be seen from different perspectives. Therefore, the complaints and the satisfaction may be contradictory. These aspects may be seen from a movie lover perspective, an audiophile or photographer or even from a simple consumer with no great expectations. That is why you may find musician’s reviews or video addicted reviews that are in contradiction. You may decide in which category you may be situated for deciding if the iPod video is worth the money or not.

     

From the same point of view, you may say that as a music player the iPod video has superior quality of sound. As a screen for the photo album, the clarity of the screen may win the competition with any TV set’s screen. As a movie player, the iPod video is below the expectations, but it may be considered a great step in the video technology.

The next three item is additional accessories for your computer. They are the microphone, speaker or headphone and Video camera or also known as Web Cam. This accessories can be a common type or you can go the really cool ones like the speaker which would create a sound like a professional speaker with those extra bass.

The Speaker.

Computer speakers, or multimedia speakers, are speakers external to a computer, that disable the lower fidelity built-in speaker. They often have a low-power internal amplifier. The standard audio connection is a 3.5 mm (approximately 1/8 inch) stereo jack plug often color-coded lime green (following the PC 99 standard) for computer sound cards. A plug and socket for a two-wire (signal and ground) coaxial cable is widely used to connect analog audio and video components. Rows of RCA sockets are found on the backs of stereo amplifier and numerous A/V products. The prong is 1/8" thick by 5/16" long. A few use an RCA connector for input. There are also USB speakers which are powered from the 5 volts at 500 milliamps provided by the USB port, allowing about 2.5 watts of output power.

A headset is headphones combined with a microphone, or one headphone with a microphone. Headsets provide the equivalent functionality of a telephone handset with hands-free operation. Headsets typically have only one speaker like a telephone, but also come with speakers for both ears. They have many uses including in call centers and other telephone-intensive jobs and for personal use at the computer to facilitate comfortable simultaneous conversation and typing.

Computer headsets generally come in two connecting types, standard 3.5 mm & USB connection. General 3.5 mm computer headset comes with two 3.5 mm connectors, one connecting to microphone jack (line-in) and one connecting to speaker jack (line-out) of the computer. 3.5 mm Computer Headsets connect to the computer via a soundcard, which converts the digital signal of the computer to analog signal for the headset. USB computer headset connects to the computer via USB ports, and the audio conversion occurs in the headset or in the control unit of the headset.

A webcam is a video camera that feeds its images in real time to a computer or computer network, often via USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi. Their most popular use is the establishment of video links, permitting computers to act as videophones or videoconference stations. This common use as a video camera for the World Wide Web gave the webcam its name. Other popular uses include security surveillance and computer vision and there are also uses on sites like video broadcasting services and for recording social videos .

Webcams are known for their low manufacturing cost and flexibility, making them the lowest cost form of videotelephony. They have also become a source of security and privacy issues, as some built-in webcams can be remotely activated via spyware.

Webcams typically include a lens, an image sensor, and some support electronics, and may also include a microphone for sound. Various lenses are available, the most common in consumer-grade webcams being a plastic lens that can be screwed in and out to set the camera's focus. Fixed focus lenses, which have no provision for adjustment, are also available. Image sensors can be CMOS or CCD, the former being dominant for low-cost cameras, but CCD cameras do not necessarily outperform CMOS-based cameras in the low cost price range. Most consumer webcams are capable of providing VGA-resolution video at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. Many newer devices can produce video in multi-megapixel resolutions, and a few can run at high frame rates such as the PlayStation Eye, which can produce 320×240 video at 120 frames per second.

Go on, Create one now.

Choose a cool name for your list, add items to it. Recommended use for the fields are -

LINK - Preferably a review of the item, or any buy page from online trading/auction companies

ADDITIONAL INFO - Price, and some of the features you would like in that. Also recommended is that you change the theme from default, as it doesn’t look too good. I’ve changed mine to mordern.

You can import your Wishlist from Amazon or del.icio.us bookmarks, and you can even share it to Twitter, Facebook and the like!

●     You can add the wishlist to your site/blog. Use the link of the item in amazon/ebay etc in the url, and ask your users to get you one thing from the list to support you.

●     You can mantain the wishlist online, so when Christmas/Diwali/Your Birthday Comes, you don’t forget something to ask from relatives.
