The Benefits Of Using Tablets

In our changing technological times, devices like tablets have become so useful to university students that some programs actually require them.  In fact, the advantages of integrating tablets into classroom situations are so plentiful that textbook manufacturers and government bodies are doing what they can to make them a key tool for students in public schools.  What are the benefits to using a tablet PC if you’re a postgraduate student?  Here are just a few:

  • In programs that require tablets, instructors can augment in-class lectures by sharing useful media through the tablets.  This can facilitate the learning experience and give students a way to interact with digital lecture materials.
  • Tablets also make it easier for you to interact with others.  The most obvious application is in the form of emailing in school assignments.  This saves paper and time and makes it easier for professors to sort and grade papers.  But what’s arguably an even bigger benefit for students is the fact that tablets can assist with teamwork.  IM and social networking programs can help students connect in and out of class to work on their assignments.  During classes with team projects, students can exchange ideas with their teammates during lecture without disturbing class.
  • There are a lot of useful apps you can install on your tablet PC or iPad.  For example, the Dictionary.com app can help with writing papers, while the Page app can assist with formatting papers.  Numbers, another affordable app, is a great alternative to Excel, and a bit more streamlined.  IM+ is an excellent application which allows students to communicate across a number of different IM platforms while running only a single program.  Having access to the World Wide Web can also put other informational sources at your fingertips, so that if something catches your interest while you’re in class or doing your homework, you can look up more information.
  • Virtual textbooks are an up-and-coming thing.  Your school may or may not have started integrating them into the curricula.  If they are available, though, they have a number of great advantages.  They cost less than paper textbooks, they’re easier to carry around, and they also are usually kept up to date by their manufacturers, which saves you from encountering outdated and incorrect information.  This may be especially handy if you are studying in a technical field and want to keep up with new developments.
Perhaps one of the best things about tablets all around is the way they have of creating a more immersive educational environment.  The whole is more than the sum of its parts.  If you actually live in campus, an immersive educational environment is something you are probably already enjoying, but for commuter students, there can be more of a gap between the classroom and the home.  Having a tablet can help you to connect with the classroom and with fellow students when you’re not on campus, which in turn can enhance your college experience and make it easier to learn new material.  And if you do live on campus, a tablet can still provide you with numerous conveniences which can enrich your academic life.

Razer Shows Off 'Edge' Windows 8 Gaming Tablet

Razer has announced the launch of Razer Edge gaming tablet at the CES in Las Vegas. At the heart of Razer Edge Tablet is the 10.1 inch display making it one of the most comfortable for playing games. Edge runs on Windows 8. It has the feeling of a laptop plus it has the ability to play any games, even those made for laptops, personal computers and exclusive gaming consoles. Razer Edge is powered an Intel Core processor and the graphics are by Nvidia. The processor is i5 and has 4GB of RAM to give all the power required for a tablet. Included is also a 64 GB solid drive. There is also another instance of the Razer running on Core i7 CPU and RAM capacity of 128 GB which can be upgraded to 256 GB SD.

Though powered by impressive hardware, you will need to have lots of add-ons to get a rich experience. The Pro version can be bought with the Gamepad controller package with analog sticks and feed back for vibration. However, the cost is a little on the higher side. You can also add peripherals like for example a keyboard and what appears to be like an illuminated key. In addition there are 3 USB ports and a HDMI port for connecting the device to High Definition television. The original battery fitted to Razer Edge has a meager life time and requires frequent charging. Battery life can go down further if you attach a keyboard or other peripheral devices. If you want extra battery life, then the only option is to buy some additional equipment.

It may be remembered that Razer Edge was originally introduced as Project Fiona and it is only now that it has been renamed. The Edge is typically a low to midrange device. In form factor, the Edge is at least two times as thick as the iPad but weighs proportionately lesser for its size. So users get a feel that it is a light device. Much though has gone into the designing of the Edge and that can be gauged from the fact a lot of time has been spent on understanding user needs. What you may not like about the design is that the device cannot be opened for making upgrades. In simple terms it means you get stuck to specifications for the lifetime of the device.

One of the major selling points in favor of the Edge is not focused on gaming alone. In fact, it has functionalities that help to be used as computing device. So you just be able to use it for accessing email and browsing the internet as well. Performance wise too, the Razer Edge has been found to be satisfactory. Most user who tried the device think that that the underside of the device heats up when used for playing high end games, though none said it was unbearable.

There are some downsides to the Edge besides the high price and the full complement of additional equipment it needs for gaming. When the device is on your lap you sure will find it comfortable, but when you have to handle it can be troublesome with the other peripheral device, and that was very much evident at the CES. The Edge can also be connected through the Bluetooth, giving it wireless abilities. On the whole, however it is more or less a decent solution for those who are looking for a device for gaming as well as for computing. Since the gadget provides enough connectivity ports, those who have other attachable devices with them already can choose the Edge and save substantially.

Technology has become a vital in today's education. Today almost all advance countries integrate the use of technology in education. Since smartphone and tablet has become widely available, the education sector is beginning to embraced this devices. Traditional books which is big and heavy for a small child to carry to school is slowly being replaced by tablet. One very big advantage of a digital book is that all the book used by the student can fit inside a single tablet, therefore freeing the student of a very heavy burden literally.

The use of projectors in class has been around us for quite some time. Especially if the price of projector has gone down dramatically, wherein a projector cost around 50K to 60K in peso about five years ago would now only cost around 20k to 30K. As the price of devices continue to drop it has become more available to the public in generally.

The infographics below should give you an idea in things to come for the digital classroom.
