Recognizing Common Oracle Database Performance Issues

Follow @ryderskull88

Oracle database performance improvements require continual and iterative efforts to produce results. It is not a one and done activity. Constant vigilance and performance monitoring are required for long-term success.

Neither is it a matter of finding and removing one performance bottleneck. There are likely more than one to be found. In fact, further investigation may lead a DBA to an even greater performance problem.

Oracle database performance problems typically result from lack of data throughput, unacceptable user or job response time, or both. To determine the nature of the problem and create a path to resolution, you must gather as much performance data as possible, including from end users, call centers, or any other stakeholder who can speak to end user system performance.

The next step is to gather Oracle database performance statistics. This can be done using the Automatic Workload Repository (AWR) or with third-party solutions such as Confio Ignite for Oracle. The statistics captured by these tools include:
  • Time model statistics
  • Wait events
  • Session and system statistics
  • Active session history
  • High-load SQL statistics

Common Oracle Database Performance Issues Defined

Using the above statistics will assist DBAs with finding some of the most common Oracle database performance problems. Here are a few:
  • CPU Bottlenecks
When the CPU approaches or exceeds maximum utilization performance problems begin. What is causing the CPU performance issues? Bad queries? Too many consecutive users? Solving CPU issues can greatly improve performance.
  • I/O Capacity Issues
Lack of I/O subsystem performance can translate to poor end-user performance. Increasing I/O capacity or decreasing I/O loads can assist in disk I/O utilization.
  • Concurrency Issues
Concurrent activities can lead to contention for shared resources that result in locks or waits for buffer cache. Monitoring session data can show DBAs where locks and waits are occurring while users wait for their request to be processed. Reducing or eliminating these with more efficient queries and database structures creates measurable performance improvements.
  • Database Configuration Issues
What configuration issues may be contributing to poor performance. Likely candidates include incorrect sizing of log files, archiving issues, excessive checkpoints, and sub-optimal parameter settings. Be sure to look for these first.
  • Unexpected Performance Loss after Tuning
This is a DBAs worse nightmare, but sometimes tuning SQL statement may result in decreased Oracle database performance. While the exact cause of such a regression isn't predictable, having it impact system performance can be avoided by using a test server to analyze SQL statement performance before launching to production environments.

Look for these and other common Oracle database performance issue when tuning your Oracle databases. Finding and repairing them will result increased database performance and decreased end user complaints.

Laptop vs. Tablet

Follow @ryderskull88

The question whether a tab can be used instead of a laptop has been around for a while now. I’m not exactly sure that a tab was every supposed to do that by design, but I tried to use my tab instead of a laptop. I mean I used it in situations when I would normally use a laptop.    Disclaimer: I was testing this approach with my Samsung GT (Galaxy Tab) P-1000. So, I do realize that it can be different on other tablets.    As is   Initially, I  tried to use it as is. I mean without any additional items such as keyboards, docks, mice, etc. And this is the first win by virtually any laptop out there, because you can easily use one without any extra stuff.

BERLIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 01: Visitors try ...
BERLIN, GERMANY - SEPTEMBER 01: Visitors try out a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet at the Samsung hall at the IFA 2011 consumer electonics and appliances trade fair the day before the fair's official opening on September 1, 2011 in Berlin, Germany. The IFA 2011 will be open to the public from September 2-7. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)

Sure thing, it’s really hard to do that if you make actual phone calls because it looks clunky and weird when you talk with someone using the loudspeaker of the device . But that’s “understandable” inconvenience because it was designed to be used primarily as a tab and the phone feature seems to be just an addition to all the stuff it can do. In any case, a tab wins over any laptop in this aspect because as far as I am aware none of the laptops designed until now can make phone calls. Right? I mean real ones. Not via Skype.   In terms of typing It kinda works but when I need to type a really long email message, it’s slowing me down quite a bit and that starts to irritate me a big deal over time. But if it’s for some quick Skype chat, then it’s pretty much a convenient thing to do. In this aspect, any laptop beats a tablet device, because the convenience of a full QWERTY keyboard just does the trick.

Now let’s tackle the music aspect. For the most part it’s a-OK but the volume level is not that high as in most laptops out there. In terms of sound quality the device works pretty well if you are not going to the extremes in turning up. :)   Games seem to be pretty raw on the tab, because the operating system and partially CPU (or whatever they call it) cannot cope with too high game requirements. So, you can only play pretty simplified games. At the same time I’d like to point out that the fact that you can actually touch stuff while playing adds quite a bit of a specific flavor to the whole gaming experience.    Apps work pretty cool, but only in case they’re compatible with your particular device. Plus they should be optimized (like screen resolution and stuff like that). I found using the Google maps app particularly beneficial when I got to a city that was new to me.

Benq laptop
Benq laptop (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Using that app, I got to my destination pretty easily owing to the excellent work of the Google Maps app for Android. I can’t really imagine how I would use it on a laptop. So, the Galaxy Tab is an absolute winner in this nomination. :)   Checking email is easy and simple as well, but like I said above, you don’t want to reply with a long message. The game changer is the fact that it’s way more easier to check your email inbox on a tab rather than using a laptop. Plus the odds are that your tab is always with you. And that’s really hard to keep a laptop at your disposal all the time.    The best way to use a 7-inch tab is for reading books. I’m starting to think that it’s gonna be its main use in my case just because you can’t sit in a cozy position reading an e book on a laptop. And that’s because of the size of any laptop. It’s just too big....

Keyboard

Connecting a keyboard to your Android device will speed up your text typing a great deal, but since you’re still using a tab, you can’t use it as a full-fledged device that can replay a laptop. For one, You can’t open two text files in Google Drive. You can open just one of them and that’s a real problem if you need the other for reference or something along those lines.

Headset

This addition will make your sound quality really amazing. I’m personally using the Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset and I’m just loving it. Apart from that, you can use it for talking on the phone, because the device has a built-in mike.

The verdict

You definitely can’t use a tab instead of a laptop, because it just lacks some very vital features, but it also has its advantages, which makes using tabs a pretty good idea as well. The problem with a tab is that the device is primarily for consumption. And I personally like creating stuff. Not just consuming... What do you say?

Three Tips towards Buying a Good Android Phone

Follow @ryderskull88

Everyone has an Android phone, and those who do not are looking to get one. If you have not yet bought an Android phone, and are definitely sure that you should get an Android phone, here are three tips that will help you choose a better Android cell phone.

To begin with, take a look at the processor that will be running the Android phone. A smaller processor may actually have you struggle to use the Android system while someone is trying to call you. Today, a 1 GHz processor is quite good for an Android phone. Anything lesser than that might be a bit obsolete, and with newer Android phones coming out almost every six months, the Android phones that have a processor smaller than 1 GHz are definitely on their way out. There are several phones that have more than 1 GHz available. The best way to find out all the specs of a particular phone is to research information about it online. Most of these sites offer the products at a discount too, so you as well buy the cell phone from a website.

Another important tip is that you should check out which operating system your cell phone is shipping with. The latest Android OS system is 2.3, but you would be surprised to find that some manufacturers are still putting in 1.8 and other versions. Though the Android phone can be upgraded Over the Air (OTA), not all cell phones have this capability. In some cases, you might have to travel to the phone manufacturer service center, and then have your mobile phone upgraded. To avoid this, all you need to do is to buy the brand and the model which provides you an Android phone with the latest operating system. Also, if you are buying the cellphone online, you should check the manual and the specifications that are provided at the website from which you are buying the cell phone.

The third tip while buying a good Android phone is to look for a good Android phone with a largish display. There are clutters of cell phones that had the Android operating system, but did not work because they did not have a good display. Remember that the Android is all about the looks and the OS, so you better have a display that does justice to all the games and the apps that the Android device provides. These are the three tips that you should keep in mind while buying an Android phone.

Infographics: The Microprocessor Timeline

A microprocessor incorporates the functions of a computer's central processing unit (CPU) on a single integrated circuit, (IC) or at most a few integrated circuits. It is a multipurpose, programmable device that accepts digital data as input, processes it according to instructions stored in its memory, and provides results as output. It is an example of sequential digital logic, as it has internal memory. Microprocessors operate on numbers and symbols represented in the binary numeral system.

The advent of low-cost computers on integrated circuits has transformed modern society. General-purpose microprocessors in personal computers are used for computation, text editing, multimedia display, and communication over the Internet. Many more microprocessors are part of embedded systems, providing digital control of a myriad of objects from appliances to automobiles to cellular phones and industrial process control.

Below is an information graphics on the 40 years of the microprocessor.

Graphics Processing Unit or Virtual Processing Unit

In the early days of computer video card or graphics card does not possess a processor. It has only a memory which is the main draw of the graphics card. The sizes of memory range from 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 MB for the high end type. That was then now memory capacity has expanded many more times the the smallest memory configuration for a graphics card is now set at 512 MB then from here the it can be 1 Gig, or more depending on your budget and requirements.

But as application grew in size and the task also required more details like rendering or 3D modelling or animation that could be mistaken for the real stuff. The memory may have more than it can handle. Manufacturer also needed to have a more active graphics card than what the current crop is offering. Somehow in application that require high output the processing task needs be taken from the CPU which traditionally handle all processing task.  Enter the GPU or Graphics Processing Unit, now what is this exactly?

A graphics processing unit or GPU (also occasionally called visual processing unit or VPU) is a specialized electronic circuit designed to rapidly manipulate and alter memory in such a way so as to accelerate the building of images in a frame buffer intended for output to a display. GPUs are used in embedded systems, mobile phones, personal computers, workstations, and game consoles. Modern GPUs are very efficient at manipulating computer graphics, and their highly parallel structure makes them more effective than general-purpose CPUs for algorithms where processing of large blocks of data is done in parallel. In a personal computer, a GPU can be present on a video card, or it can be on the motherboard or -- in certain CPUs -- on the CPU die. More than 90% of new desktop and notebook computers have integrated GPUs, which are usually far less powerful than those on a dedicated video card.

English: GeForce 256 Quadro (NV10GL) GPUImage via Wikipedia

The term was popularized by Nvidia in 1999, who marketed the GeForce 256 as "the world's first 'GPU', or Graphics Processing Unit, a single-chip processor with integrated transform, lighting, triangle setup/clipping, and rendering engines that is capable of processing a minimum of 10 million polygons per second". Rival ATI Technologies coined the term visual processing unit or VPU with the release of the Radeon 9700 in 2002.

As mention above this two company popularized the term GPU and VPU for marketing and branding purposes of both there respective product. Modern GPUs use most of their transistors to do calculations related to 3D computer graphics. They were initially used to accelerate the memory-intensive work of texture mapping and rendering polygons, later adding units to accelerate geometric calculations such as the rotation and translation of vertices into different coordinate systems.

Recent developments in GPUs include support for programmable shaders which can manipulate vertices and textures with many of the same operations supported by CPUs, oversampling and interpolation techniques to reduce aliasing, and very high-precision color spaces. Because most of these computations involve matrix and vector operations, engineers and scientists have increasingly studied the use of GPUs for non-graphical calculations.

Dedicated graphics cards

The GPUs of the most powerful class typically interface with the motherboard by means of an expansion slot such as PCI Express (PCIe) or Accelerated Graphics Port (AGP) and can usually be replaced or upgraded with relative ease, assuming the motherboard is capable of supporting the upgrade. A few graphics cards still use Peripheral Component Interconnect (PCI) slots, but their bandwidth is so limited that they are generally used only when a PCIe or AGP slot is not available.

English: The ATI Radeonâ„¢ HD 5770 Graphics Card...Image via Wikipedia

GeForce FX5900 graphics cardImage via Wikipedia

A dedicated GPU is not necessarily removable, nor does it necessarily interface with the motherboard in a standard fashion. The term "dedicated" refers to the fact that dedicated graphics cards have RAM that is dedicated to the card's use, not to the fact that most dedicated GPUs are removable. Dedicated GPUs for portable computers are most commonly interfaced through a non-standard and often proprietary slot due to size and weight constraints. Such ports may still be considered PCIe or AGP in terms of their logical host interface, even if they are not physically interchangeable with their counterparts.

Integrated graphics solutions

Integrated graphics solutions, shared graphics solutions, or Integrated graphics processors (IGP) utilize a portion of a computer's system RAM rather than dedicated graphics memory. They are integrated into the motherboard. Exceptions are AMD's IGPs that use dedicated sideport memory on certain motherboards, and APUs, where they are integrated with the CPU die. Computers with integrated graphics account for 90% of all PC shipments. These solutions are less costly to implement than dedicated graphics solutions, but tend to be less capable. Historically, integrated solutions were often considered unfit to play 3D games or run graphically intensive programs but could run less intensive programs such as Adobe Flash. Examples of such IGPs would be offerings from SiS and VIA circa 2004.

video_cardImage by marklinkphoto via Flickr

ATI Video CardImage by williamhartz via Flickr

However, modern integrated graphics processors such as AMD's Fusion IGPs and Intel's HD Graphics are more than capable of handling 2D graphics from Adobe Flash or low stress 3D graphics, but struggle with the latest games like Battlefield 3. IGPs like the Intel's HD Graphics 3000 and AMD's Fusion IGPs have improved performance that may match cheap dedicated graphic cards, but still lag behind the more expensive dedicated graphics cards. While older platforms had the IGP integrated onto the motherboard, newer platforms (Intel Core i series and AMD Fusion) integrate the GPU right onto the CPU die.

Graphics Procession Unit will continue to be developed in all capabilities as more demanding high end application require more realistic and faster output.

Simple Guide on How to Have The Best Laptops

Christmas day is almost upon us, somehow a lot of people out there has already gotten his/her gifts for Christmas and some of those gifts are gadgets such latest smartphone, desktop computer, tablet or laptop. For those who have not yet gotten there gifts especially if they want a laptop or the gift giver has not chosen any laptop yet for gifts because of  still confuse on what to based the choices to get that laptop, i have created a list of things to consider when buying a laptop this Christmas season as gift or for personal enjoyment.

The first part of the list for some has one of the most weigh in deciding on getting a laptop, you do not need to be a technical person to understand the first part. while the second part needs a little understanding of the technicalities of laptop and computers. Enough about these here they are and i hope you find the list very helpful.

laptopsImage by saikofish via Flickr

1. Price. You have to have a fixed budget when planning to buy a laptop because in case you don’t know, laptops are more expensive compared to their counterparts. Once you identify your budget, then you need to stick to it.You need to be strict when it comes to your budget.

2. Size Laptops come in different screen size and thickness. So, if you require portability, then you can buy a smaller one around 10 inches wide. But, if you will be working in a fixed place and only requires lesser portability, then you can choose the 15-19 inch laptops. What is the most comfortable  screen size for you since laptop is smaller than desktop you need to set the size of the screen that you want when considering the size of the laptop.

3. Brand The proven laptop brands include DELL, HP, LENOVO and ASUS which does not have much computer breakdowns. However, there are other brands that are also dependable but still under review. this part needs a little research or get some information from your friends ask them what kind of laptop they have and what are the key feature for each then based on that set your mind to the brand of laptop that yo would like to buy. This will make it easy for you to choose among the different brands of laptop available today.

After discussing the aesthetic parts and company guarantee of laptops, here are other important things that you should know to help you decide what to buy:

1.Central Processor Unit (CPU): The CPU refers to the speed of your laptop and is measured in GHZ. Now, if you are going to use your laptop doing some basic stuff only, then there’s no problem with a lower GHZ but if you will be using it in gaming or graphics or videos, then you should opt for a faster CPU.

2.Memory Cards: Most laptops today only have 2GB memory but it’s not a problem for an average user. Nevertheless, when you want to open many programs at once and still require your laptop to run fast, a higher memory is what suits you.

A System76 laptop displays the Ubuntu Edgy log...Image via Wikipedia

3.Hard Drive: If you plan on saving or downloading movies and audio files apart from the data files that you have, then you should opt for a bigger storage like a 400GB hard drive.

4.Operating System (OS): Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Mac OS X which only runs on Apple computers, and Linux are just the few of the Operating Software in the market. The OS is the base software that is running on your computer.

5.Wireless network card: To be able to connect to the internet, your laptop computer needs to have a network card so that wherever you go, you can surf the internet once your laptop detects a wireless network.

6.Optical Disk Drive: If you want to watch DVD movies or have files saved on cds then you should buy a laptop which has an optical disk drive and shun away from net-books and notebooks though you can still buy an external optical disk drive.

Computer 101: What is a Computer Motherboard Really Part 2?

Let’s go back so far several items have been mentioned as being connected to the motherboard, they are the following hard disk drive which connect via the older IDE or the newer SATA interface cable, then the memory or RAM which is connected via the memory slot and then there’s the graphics card which is generally built-in or is connected via the graphics card slot which could be the now phase-out AGP slot or the newer PCIE slot. All the three system mentioned previously communicates with each other via the motherboard and also communicates with the central processing unit or CPU. The motherboard also serves as the manager of all different systems connected on it. The motherboard also facilitates the proper flow of data from one point to another. One important function of the motherboard is to regulate the flow of current from the power supply unit to all the different components that needs them. The power supply unit is also connected via the motherboard using several color coded wire where in each wire color correspond to a specific value of power that flows thru it.

Also other additional system that interacts with the motherboard are the sound card which processes information to be converted to sound and is play out via a speaker system. Another expansion system is the NIC controller which comes in two configurations. The first type is built-in NIC controller and the second is add-in card. The NIC stand for network interface card or controller, this system allows the computer to be connected to a network, or to the internet. The expansion NIC is also connected via the PCIE slot located next to the graphics card. Also all motherboard have external connector for external devices such the printer, mp3 player, Smartphone, external drive, flash drive, microphone, speaker and many other devices. As we can see the motherboard is the host for all the devices that can connected to the computer. Other devices can also use the external ports of a motherboard to charge their battery. This feature was not available before, but as technology evolves and develops the computer allows other devices such as smart phone and mp3 player to charge their battery via the usb ports.

Motherboard Chips
Memory

One important feature of the computer motherboard is that there are no moving parts. All different systems are electronic there is no wear unlike parts that has a clear movable parts where the continuous movement through constant usage at a long period of time will eventually result in that parts succumbing to wear and tear. But since all components are small, to be exact micro in size or even smaller that power they consume less power compare to conventional devices which would eat a considerable amount of power. While wear and tear is not common to electronic component, power surges are common. These small electronic component when feed with the right amount of power will function correctly but if the power being feed increases dramatically at a given time then that electronic component is very susceptible power burn-out which will cause the main system to malfunction and eventually failure. Just like what I posted a couple of days ago regarding motherboard failure cause by blown-out capacitor, the same is true with IC based components.

CPU

Integrated circuit is the main components of all type of motherboard and much other electronic system. All integrated circuit consume certain amount of very low power from 4 volts DC to 15 volts DC. So if there is a power surge on the motherboard system most IC would not be able to withstand such a sudden increase in power and will always burn-out once the power flowing through is suddenly increased instantly. The main benefit of very small circuits is that a lot of system can be built and compacted which in turns would produce smaller system and greater efficiency in operation. Also the cost of building such system is very chip as well since free made smaller system is already working and linking them together is the only problem. A problem that be easily solve by proper design and configuration. So whenever we are giving importance to other components of the computer the motherboard should also be at the top or near the top of your list because it plays a very important function in your computer over-all performance.

Computer 101: What is a Computer Motherboard Really?

A lot of topic has been discussed about this one major component of the personal computer. Then why create one and add more to the confusion? There are so many articles out here that adding this one might only make things more complicated. We based on my fifteen years of experience building and repairing personal computer, the computer motherboard is more than just connection, and circuit. To me it is the central focal point of all things in a personal computer. In this article we will go in depth regarding how a motherboard works in real life environment and how it is affected by inside and outside forces not just parts and function or this works like this and it is connected to this and that. There are already a lot of those kind of stuff in the internet just some research and it will pop-up.

For anatomy that computer motherboard can be compared to the human skeletal system. But why, well for one the bones in our body is the one responsible for keeping up all that is you and me. Yup there is the muscle but without the bones we will all look like a big lump of a mass bulging on the ground. The motherboard is more that just connection it is a means of communication between devices and different system integrated or added in the motherboard. To generalize all electronic devices has a main board inside each and everyone of theme. From the newest smart phone, tablet, laptop, Television and more each and every one of these items has a main board inside them. Those lines that we saw in every motherboard are more than just line of connection there are the line of communication.

PCI Slot

Dual CPU Slot

Let’s take a closer look what are the different system that connect and communicate with each other and with the motherboard. On top of the list is the mighty brain of the computer, the central processing unit or CPU also known as processor or micro processor. These device is the one that process all the information being used by all the separate system inside the computer and is connected via the motherboard. The processor communicates via the motherboard to all the other system in the computer while it also processes all the information for all the different systems. Another such different systems in your computer are the hard disk drive unit. It is a complete system that is connected also to the motherboard via the cable like the older IDE cable and the newer SATA cable. Lets take a look at these two different system, while the processor is the brain the hard disk drive is the main permanent storage of all types of information used in the computer. The processor’s job is to process information but what happen after processing all those information. Where are all that process information goes too? Or what happen to information before and after being process by the processor?

IDE Cable

SATA and Power Cable

Well before being process all information stays in the hard disk drive and after being process it comes back to the hard disk drive. Yup that why the hard disk drives is the main permanent storage of all types of information being used by the computer. Ever notice I keep adding the word permanent to all storage word that because there are two types of data storage in computer, one is the permanent type while the other is the temporary type. But why do we need a temporary type of data storage since all our information and data is important? Well yup that is correct all the information and data that we put inside the computer is important that why we used computer to almost anything today. It’ likes this temporary information and data is what we call the ones being use at the moment. Let’s say the user is going to watch a movie stored in the computer, the file of that movie is stored permanently in the hard drive. In order for that movie to brought to the screen of the computer it needs to be process by the process and then sent via the motherboard to the memory or RAM to be stored temporarily and than sent via the graphics card to be process or converted to analog signal for displaying in CRT type screen or process then displayed to an LCD or LED type screen.

RAM

Ops we mentioned three things there, the Memory, graphics card and screen. If the hard disk drive is the permanent storage facility inside the computer then the memory or RAM is the temporary holding area for the information and data while that data is being use by the computer or while we watch the movie it is temporary stored in the memory. This is one reason why we need a larger amount of memory so that while playing a movie it would continue to play properly and we enjoy watching it. Compare to a movie which barely plays on because the computer does not have enough memory capacity to store and play it correctly. So why happen to the data stored in the memory? Well all the information and data store in the memory is erase or deleted after we turn-off the computer. Yup that what happen if we turn off the computer then the data stored in the memory is erase. But the data in the hard drive is not even if we turn the computer of that information or data is still stored there. That why there is permanent and temporary storage of data. To be continued………
