Ubuntu Powered Smartphones to Hit the Market in October

Let’s face it! Ubuntu’s newest mobile OS has more than a handful of features to make users fall in love with it. Guess what, I’m one of the many nerds myself! So, what’s hot in the smartphone market? The latest news is that Mark Shuttleworth, the company’s founder and CEO, recently gave some clear-cut information on what the road ahead is like, for the company’s forthcoming array of lineups slated for 2013. In an interview to the Wall Street Journal, Shuttleworth officially announced that the company’s first every native OS-powered smartphone would indefinitely hit the market in October, provided the company’s ongoing preparations are on track without any intermediate delay. As we have seen it on numerous occasions in the past, mobile software launches have come to a halt several times – the most recent being the launch of Blackberry 10. Originally slated to hit the market in 2012, the handset saw the light of the day only last week.

Coming back to our point of discussion, Shuttleworth didn’t have much information for the users in the rest of the chat with the Wall Street Journal. Ubuntu – one of the newest operating systems for smartphones made its nascent presence felt on the ambitious Samsung Galaxy Nexus recently, when the news was announced at last month’s CES 2013 event held in Los Angeles.

In the interview, the company’s founder, Mark Shuttleworth declined to reveal the name of any potential handset that could feature the Ubuntu OS for smartphones in the coming days. Nevertheless that may not rule out expert views – the buzz is that we could soon see Ubuntu’s native OS featuring in any of the flagship devices later this year. After being integrated into the most-anticipated Galaxy Nexus, most developers are now looking to incorporate Ubuntu’s mobile OS in their smartphones.

When prompted again, Shuttleworth finally let the cat out of the bag, not fully though. He said, the promising mobile OS will be making its entry in two major marketplaces later this year – however (yes, you guesses it right!), there is no specific information on it. A hint soon followed.. Shuttleworth said the company is looking at North America as a ‘key market place’ where Ubuntu is most likely to make its debut probably by this fall. As his words suggests, Ubuntu has to overcome some tough competition if it has to make its mark as a leader in the mobile OS space. That’s something interesting to see!

The good news is that, most technical experts who reviewed the Ubuntu OS for smartphones expressed confidence that it will floor some of the major mobile operating systems that exist at present. Experts felt that the stylish user interface and wide array of features could be the key elements that would trigger the success of Ubuntu’s native mobile app.

With the promising Ubuntu all set to make its debut, what are its competitors up to now? Here is what. Telefonica is looking to incorporate the cost-effective Firefox as its OS. Other carriers are also planning to add more features and user-friendly elements in their devices. So the competition is only getting tougher and tougher. Let’s see what kind of impact can Ubuntu’s native OS will make in the smartphone market.

Razer Shows Off 'Edge' Windows 8 Gaming Tablet

Razer has announced the launch of Razer Edge gaming tablet at the CES in Las Vegas. At the heart of Razer Edge Tablet is the 10.1 inch display making it one of the most comfortable for playing games. Edge runs on Windows 8. It has the feeling of a laptop plus it has the ability to play any games, even those made for laptops, personal computers and exclusive gaming consoles. Razer Edge is powered an Intel Core processor and the graphics are by Nvidia. The processor is i5 and has 4GB of RAM to give all the power required for a tablet. Included is also a 64 GB solid drive. There is also another instance of the Razer running on Core i7 CPU and RAM capacity of 128 GB which can be upgraded to 256 GB SD.

Though powered by impressive hardware, you will need to have lots of add-ons to get a rich experience. The Pro version can be bought with the Gamepad controller package with analog sticks and feed back for vibration. However, the cost is a little on the higher side. You can also add peripherals like for example a keyboard and what appears to be like an illuminated key. In addition there are 3 USB ports and a HDMI port for connecting the device to High Definition television. The original battery fitted to Razer Edge has a meager life time and requires frequent charging. Battery life can go down further if you attach a keyboard or other peripheral devices. If you want extra battery life, then the only option is to buy some additional equipment.

It may be remembered that Razer Edge was originally introduced as Project Fiona and it is only now that it has been renamed. The Edge is typically a low to midrange device. In form factor, the Edge is at least two times as thick as the iPad but weighs proportionately lesser for its size. So users get a feel that it is a light device. Much though has gone into the designing of the Edge and that can be gauged from the fact a lot of time has been spent on understanding user needs. What you may not like about the design is that the device cannot be opened for making upgrades. In simple terms it means you get stuck to specifications for the lifetime of the device.

One of the major selling points in favor of the Edge is not focused on gaming alone. In fact, it has functionalities that help to be used as computing device. So you just be able to use it for accessing email and browsing the internet as well. Performance wise too, the Razer Edge has been found to be satisfactory. Most user who tried the device think that that the underside of the device heats up when used for playing high end games, though none said it was unbearable.
-->
There are some downsides to the Edge besides the high price and the full complement of additional equipment it needs for gaming. When the device is on your lap you sure will find it comfortable, but when you have to handle it can be troublesome with the other peripheral device, and that was very much evident at the CES. The Edge can also be connected through the Bluetooth, giving it wireless abilities. On the whole, however it is more or less a decent solution for those who are looking for a device for gaming as well as for computing. Since the gadget provides enough connectivity ports, those who have other attachable devices with them already can choose the Edge and save substantially.

Microsoft Rumored to Launch 'Windows Phone 7.8'

Rumors break down any barriers and sometimes imagination spreads like wild fire. Rumors usually surround Apple products. This time around, Microsoft has attracted the attention and its new product Windows Phone 7.8 has been targeted to be rumored. Toni Tech Blog has stated that Microsoft is all set to release its new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7.8. Microsoft had earlier stated that its upcoming product will be released by the beginning of 2013. This little rumor of the product being launched on Wednesday has been spotted in a number of sites including WMPower User and Mashable.

The rumor must have started from a tip that was found in the Microsoft centered blog. The blog spoke about the latest arrival of new software for Smartphones like Lumia 900 and 510 which belong to Nokia. WMPower User is not able to verify the tip or get a clear understanding of it, because Nokia and Microsoft have been teasing about Windows Phone 7.8. They have been talking about it for months and so, coming to a conclusion with a single line is impossible.

Microsoft comes up with special operating systems for mobiles and PCs frequently. The much expected operating system, Windows Phone 8 was released by the end of October with great pomp. Windows Phone 8 from Microsoft is the first platform which has the capability to share building blocks. Many are still confused over Windows 8 OS and Windows Phone 8 OS. Both the operating systems share common features starting from the live-tile interface which is the signature style of Windows 8.

Meanwhile, WPCentral has stated that it landed upon some promotional materials in Finnish which reveals that there will be a new update following the 7.8 update. It has also mentioned that the materials threw some light on a few new features of 7.8. The 7.8 phone OS is expected to have a unique start screen and plenty of color themes which can be chosen based on convenience.

It is expected to have a lock screen based on Bing and a Wi-Fi connection that can be kept alive even when the Nokia devices are in suspend mode. Every individual tile can be moved around and placed at your convenience. You have the liberty to arrange the screen in such a way that all your apps are in order. For example: All business apps can be placed on top of the screen and all the personal apps at the bottom of the screen. It is also expected to carry the ability to receive and send files using the “Bluetooth File Transfer” which is also a rumor.

Supposedly, CNET is expected to contact Microsoft and learn more about the rumors surrounding it. However, TechCrunch says that a Microsoft spokesman told that complete details about Windows Phone 7.8 will be disclosed by the company in the future.

This news might be a little comforting to the WP7 OS phone owners because Microsoft announced that the new WP8 OS cannot be upgraded by customers who are using the old version. Customers of Nokia Lumia 710 and 900 were disappointed over this announcement. However, back in June when Windows Phone 8 made its official debut, Microsoft and Nokia promised that a new OS carrying the similar features will be sported to an updated version of WP7. This was specifically designed for the WP7 customers. So, this new Windows Phone 7.8 version can be upgraded by Windows Phone 7 customers. Until Microsoft opens up, the rumor is going to be up in the air. I guess the company is going to let the rumors stay in the air a little longer. What do you think?

How to Move From WordPress.com to WordPress.org

There could be several reasons as to why you want to shift from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. The latter offers many advantages over the former. Some of them are - including advertisements on your blog, installing themes that you like, the ability to use advanced tracking software etc. Whatever the reason, moving your blog is not as difficult as you think. Simply follow the steps below and you’ll soon be on your way.

1. Get a domain name: This is the first and most important thing you should do. Renting server space is another requirement. You have the option of buying a web domain from sites such as Network Solutions or Google Apps. Alternatively, you can use web hosting services (such as KnowHost, Rackspace, Blue Host etc). It does not matter which hosting provider you choose, but do ensure that the hosting account includes details such as PHP compatibility, domain registration and MySOL databases.

2. Transfer posts: Once you have your domain name and server space sorted out, you will need to transfer your posts. Most web hosting companies offer a pre-written installation for WordPress, so this should be easy. Note that the WordPress software should be installed in a sub directory. Once this is done, you will need to click Tools- Exports on your old WordPress.com administration dashboard. Save the XML file on your desktop. Then on your new website’s administration dashboard, you need to click on Tools – Import and select WordPress. Choose the file you have downloaded previously. Then check the box which reads Import Attachments. By doing the above, all information from your old blog will be imported into your new blog at WordPress.org.

3. Direct traffic to the new site: You will need to ensure that followers of your blog and search engines will still be able to find your site. In order to do this, you will need to login to the company you registered your domain with (your domain registrar). Go to your domain’s DNS settings to make the change. Click on Configure DNS Servers and change the name to ns1, wordpress.com . Be sure you write down your existing server addresses before you make the change. Now select Upgrades – Domains from the new website’s dashboard. Enter the new address and select Add domain to blog. Click on Map Domain when you are asked to confirm this. Once this is done, go back to the dashboard and click on Upgrades – Domains. Check Update Primary Domain on the box where you have the domain name.

4. Save the changes: The last step in this process is to save the above mentioned changes. Now both your old and new domains will take visitors and search engines to your new site. Do keep in mind that Domain mapping is a paid service and you will have to renew this from Wordpress.com on a yearly basis.

These are the steps that must be followed carefully to export your blog to the new site. As you can see, that’s all it takes to move from WordPress.com to WordPress.org. Once you have done this, sit back and enjoy all the features you can use to enhance your blog.
