With the recent introduction of warmer summers we are starting to experience a new influx of tropical bugs in our homes and gardens. Some of them are quite stunning but also more than a little scary, especially those flying critters. So how do we differentiate between the safe and the not so safe insects? Okay, you may not be at risk of a life threatening bite, but it always pays to be on the cautious side. It would be great if we all had a degree in zoology, but sadly we don’t. So, how about the next best thing? Your Smartphone may just have the answer, there are several Apps that allow us to identify these bugs and check out how bad that sting or bite really is. This App will run on your iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad and it requires iOS 3.0 or later for smooth running. Okay, if you are lucky enough to live in one of the warmer areas of our country, you may be used to seeing all kinds of exotic insects and wildlife in your garden, but how about the rest of us? The bugs seem to be running amok in the summer and some of them are, quite frankly, scary looking. Many species have started moving into the Northern areas from Central and South America, and they are here to stay. This App was developed by some very clever folk down in Florida, and they know a hell of a lot about these creepy crawlies. If you happen to spot a new type of cockroach, the chances are that it’s probably covered here. You’ll get a host of links to pest-specific websites and you will learn so much about your uninvited guests as a result. Once you start to understand these creatures, the easier it will be to live alongside them, or at least that’s the plan!

Okay, our second Smartphone pest identifying App is brought to you by the National Pest Management Association. This application also contains a mind of information about the bugs and beetles we find in our homes and gardens, and there’s quite a few! Once you identify the varmint, you’ll find out exactly how to deal with them quickly. There is also a prevention section that can help you keep these creepy crawlies away in future. If these tips don’t work, you’ve also got the added option of calling in the heavyweights! Just dial in your postcode and you’ll soon have a choice of pest control professionals to do your dirty work for you. It’s a neat App and will definitely help you get shot of those uninvited guests!
