Software Design 101: What is Selenium?

Selenium is freeware, open-source integrated development environment (IDE) that allows developers to do automated browser testing. Automated browser testing is used to debug web applications, but the software also has the capability to automate repetitive and tedious web administration duties as well. You can download Selenium IDE as a plug-in for Mozilla Firefox that also includes Selenium Web Driver, which allows for more robust testing.

A Brief History of Selenium

Jason Huggins and other programmers and testers at ThoughtWorks developed Selenium in 2004 because Huggins was dissatisfied with other testing products on the market. Huggins was mocked one such competitor, Mercury Interactive QuickTest Professional, in an email suggesting their product should be called Selenium because Selenium is a cure for mercury poisoning; the name stuck. Over the years the number of people who have contributed the software's development has grown considerably. ThoughtWorks employees all over the world helped with testing and deploying the application. In 2007, Huggins left ThoughtWorks and became part of Google's Selenium support team. The most recent change in the IDE is that the long-standing Selenium Remote Control tools have been depreciated and replaced by Selenium Web Driver.

Why Use Selenium?

Say you've built a web-age with a form on it. The form has about 20 fields and you need to test it with multiple variable inputs. Repeatedly filling out the form manually is tedious and a waste of precious development time. With Selenium, you can automate the testing and record the results to see if any errors pop up. Selenium is also handy for testing JavaScript applets to ensure that they work properly and the end users doesn't encounter any frustrating errors. Selenium helps free web developers from mundane tasks so that they can spend more time concentrating on developing and not debugging.

What is Selenium Compatible With?

Selenium is compatible with the C#, Java, Perl, PHP, Python and Ruby programming languages. Additionally, Selenium is available for the Linux, OSX, Solaris and Windows operating systems. Selenium also supports a wide variety of testing frameworks such as: Bromine, Hermes, ISFW, JUnit, NUnit, Robot Framework Selenium Library, RSpec (Ruby), Test:Unit (Ruby), TestNG (Java) and Unittest (Python). Selenium has limited support for other web browsers, but it primarily intended to be used with Firefox. SeleniumHQ maintains an updated list of what features are compatible with different browsers.

For Web Developers, Selenium is a must have tool in their arsenal and many couldn't fathom working without it. Selenium is also extremely popular among web development students as well because it is a free download. If you're looking to automate some of your development and testing chores, Selenium is worth trying.

About the Author: Ela Osinski has worked for several software and app development companies and enjoys learning about different types of software. Selenium is an important programming tool and you need to have a working knowledge in your arsenal.

The History of Web Design

Follow @ryderskull88

The W3C was created in October 1994, to "lead the World Wide Web to its full potential by developing common protocols that promote its evolution and ensure its interoperability." This discouraged and one company from monopolizing a propriety browser and programming language, which could have altered the effect of the World Wide Web as a whole. The W3C continues to set standards, which can today be seen with JavaScript.

In 1994 Andreessen formed Mosaic Communications corp. That later became known as Netscape Communications the Netscape 0.9 browser. Netscape created its own HTML tags without regards to the traditional standards process. For example Netscape 1.1 included tags for changing background colours and formatting text with tables on web pages. Throughout 1996 to 1999 the browser wars began. The browser wars saw Microsoft and Netscape battle it out for the ultimate browser dominance. During this time there were many new technologies in the field, notably Cascading Style Sheets, JavaScript, and Dynamic HTML. On a whole the browser competition did lead to many positive creations and helped web design evolve at a rapid pace.

The Demand for Website Maintenance in Commercial Businesses

Businesses compete hard against one another all over the world. One of the activities that companies perform is to put up a website that allows their customers to get to know their firm better. Websites play a major role in online businesses and their activities which is why there is a growing demand for information technology or IT personnel.

If you are looking for an opportunity to properly establish your own business and get great prospects from an IT program, then doing website maintenance might be one of the many roles in Internet related jobs that you might want to look into. Right now, the increasing need for webmasters and web developers continue to rise due to the popularity of online tasks, and this doesn’t stop with building the website, sometimes a more important role like maintaining or administrating the website arises.

MacGyvers of The Web

Webmasters are considered as the jack of all trades in the internet world. It is no surprise that they are expected to be skillful and have extensive knowledge when it comes to traditional IT jobs and services. And specifically, web administrators or maintenance head are the total MacGyvers of the web. They can find flaws and efficiently and effectively solve them.

Web-mastering and development entail educating customers and authors, the generation of log reports, content management and publishing, website and server security, client interaction, server performance maintenance and monitoring, client side scripting, creating templates for authors and providing user and technical report among others. These tools can be used in problems and issues prevention, diagnostics and solution.

What to Look For in Finding a Reliable Web Administrator

With the above-mentioned responsibilities, commercial businesses can really benefit from having a reliable web administrator. Companies are provided help when it comes to online applications including ongoing site tuning, e-commerce offers and even the management and creation of pictures and logos and many other things. Advancements like script upgrades and CMS changes will also be handled smoothly with the help of a web admin.

This is an important aspect of maintaining a website because out of the hundreds of millions accessing the Internet and potentially your website, there will always be a small number of them who might be out there to exploit security vulnerabilities of your website. This can lose you money, customers and ultimately destroy your website and your business’s reputation. And a business websites gets hacked or exploited with viruses or malwares, customers tend to remember it for a long time.

Today, job opportunities have flooded in this profession perhaps because of the recognition given to outsourcing. Before you hire a webmaster, it is significant that you check that he is indeed a webmaster. These people are supposed to be equipped with technical knowledge and educational attainment particularly in IT courses including ASP, PHP and JavaScript. Apart from technical jobs, they can also handle marketing, advertising and e-commerce project completion which are there of the most essential business aspects right now.

Paul has been a web administrator for more than 3 years. He makes sure that the websites he handles are hosted by a reliable cPanel dedicated server or cPanel VPS hosting company.

Infographics: HTML5 vs Flash Games

HTML5 is a language for structuring and presenting content for the World Wide Web, and is a core technology of the Internet originally proposed by Opera Software. It is the fifth revision of the HTML standard and as of February 2012 is still under development. Its core aims have been to improve the language with support for the latest multimedia while keeping it easily readable by humans and consistently understood by computers and devices (web browsers, parsers, etc.). HTML5 is intended to subsume not only HTML 4, but XHTML 1 and DOM Level 2 HTML as well.

Adobe Flash (formerly Macromedia Flash) is a multimedia platform used to add animation, video, and interactivity to web pages. Flash is frequently used for advertisements, games and flash animations for broadcast. More recently, it has been positioned as a tool for "Rich Internet Applications" ("RIAs").

Flash manipulates vector and raster graphics to provide animation of text, drawings, and still images. It supports bidirectional streaming of audio and video, and it can capture user input via mouse, keyboard, microphone, and camera. Flash contains an object-oriented language called ActionScript and supports automation via the JavaScript Flash language (JSFL).

Flash content may be displayed on various computer systems and devices, using Adobe Flash Player, which is available free of charge for common web browsers, some mobile phones, and a few other electronic devices (using Flash Lite).

I know a lot of blog have discuss about this item about putting a new add widget on you blog hosted in Blogger. I just want to help out the newbie Blogger who does not have enough understanding about HTML, java script and programming. Reading thru does lines of codes can be very daunting to a newbie Blogger and even to some season Blogger. In this step all the skills that we need is how to read and compare lines. We will just need to modify a few items on the html coding of the blog. But before you proceed make that only the lines shown here are the one that you need to modify only. Do not touch any other part of the code.

First of all log in to your blog-spot account of your blog. Once you are log-in click the DESIGN then click on the EDIT HTML option then look for the EXPAND WIDGETS TEMPLATE then once located put a check mark on the small box besides it. Then to quicken the search ob the HTML code of your blog press Ctrl + F so that a search box will appear at the bottom of your browser. Then on the inside of your browser type the first few lines of this code:

                  <b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='1' showaddelement='no'>

The search item will be quickly displayed, look for the same code as above. Okay once you located this line of code focus your attention on two key items. First on the maxwidget=1 we are going to change the current value of this instead of 1 please change it to 2 then for the next item the showaddelement='no' the current value is set to no please change it to yes. After modifying the value of this two item your code should look like this:

<b:section class='header' id='header' maxwidgets='2' showaddelement='yes'>

After modifying we need to save your template just click on the SAVE TEMPLATE button located just below to editor box. Wait for the confirmation that your modification has been save before returning to the PAGE ELEMENTS page of the dashboard. The page elements you will notice that a new add widget item has appeared. This new item can be very useful especially if you have a advertising code that you need to insert on your blog but could not do so because you have no html or java script programming skills.
