This article is meant to dissect internet usage around the world. The world population in 2006 was 6.5 billion. The percentage using internet in the world in that year was 18 percent. As a consequence the percentage not using the internet was 82 percent. In 2011 the world population was 7 bn. The percentage of the world using the internet during that year rose to 35 percent with 65 percent not using the internet.
Users in the developing world were 8 percent in 2006 and 22 percent in 2011. Users in the developed world were 10 percent in 2006 and 13 percent in 2011. Let’s take a look at users per Earth region. 3% people used the internet in Africa in 2006 and 13% in 2011. The Americas saw an increase in usage from 39% in 2006 to 56% in2011. 11% of the Arab states used the internet in 2006 and 29% of them used it in 2011. 11% of the Asia-Pacific region used the internet in 2006 and 27% of them used it in 2011. 13% of the Commonwealth of Independent States used the internet in 2006 and 48% used it in 2011. 50% of the European population was connected to the internet in 2006 and 74% was connected in 2011.
Numbers of Broadband Users
A study of broadband usage revealed the following results. 5.3% of the world population had fixed broadband subscription in 2006 and 8.5% had these in 2011.The developing world had 2.3% and 4.8% fixed broadband subscriptions in 2006 and 2011 respectively. The developed world on the other hand reported 18.3% and 25.7% fixed broadband subscriptions in 2006 and 2011 respectively.
Numbers of Mobile Subscriptions
Mobile subscriptions in the developing world were 0.8% and 8.5% in 2006 and 2011. The same in the developed world were 18.5% and 56.5% in 2006 and 2011. Now let us examine broadband subscriptions by region. 0.1% and 0.2% of Africa were subscribed to broadband in 2007 and 2011. 11% and 15.5% of the Americas were subscribed to broadband in the same time. 0.9% and2.2% of the Arab states were subscribed to broadband in 2006 and 2011. 3.3% and 6.2% of the Asia-Pacific region was subscribed to broadband in 2006 and 2011. 2.3% and 9.6% of the CIS was subscribed to broadband in 2006 and 2011. 18.4% and 25.8% of Europe was subscribed to broadband in 2006 and 2011. Mobile subscriptions for these years were as follows Africa -2.2%, Americas 6.4%, Arab States 0.8%, Asia and Pacific - 3.1%, CIS - 0.2% and Europe -14.7% in the year 2006. In the year 2011 these figures were; Africa 3.8%, Americas – 30.5%, Arab States – 13.3%, Asia and Pacific – 10.7%, CIS – 14.9%, Europe – 54.1%.
Internet Language
57% of the content language for the web was English. German, Russian, Japanese, Spanish, Chinese, French, Italian, Portuguese accounted for between 2% and 7% each. Other languages accounted for 10% of the web content. 27% of web users were English users with 29% being Chinese. Spanish, Japanese, Portuguese, German, Arabic, French, Russian and Korean accounted for between 2% to 8% of the users. Other languages accounted for 17% of internet users.
Current Internet Penetration Worldwide
Internet penetration is high in the US, Canada, UK and Australia being above 60 percent in these countries. In Mexico, Brazil, the Russian Federation, Saudi Arabia and a few smaller countries the penetration is between 10% and 20%. Germany has a penetration of 59% while Poland, Belarus and Romania have a penetration of above 20%. China has a penetration of 8.5 percent and India has a penetration of 4.5%. A Clear wireless coverage map would show most of the US covered with broadband penetration.
