If you take almost any job in any office around the world, then answering the phone is likely to play at least a small part in what you do on a day to day basis. It is very important that you know how to answer the phone so that you might be able to help the business to answer business inquiries and to provide customer support and the more people the company has to do this for them the better service they will be able to provide for their customers.
However at the same time you are also likely to make a certain amount of calls. The reason for this is that you will be trying to sell, or getting information or communicating with clients, and there are countless reasons why we make calls when we are part of a business.
So if you are running your own business online, whether that means just running a website or doing some more involved, then you really should be doing the same thing and using the telephone on a regular basis to communicate.
Why Aren't You Calling?
If you aren’t using the phone to help promote your business and create new opportunities then there are probably several reasons why. The first reason might be simply that it hadn’t occurred to you – with so many ways to contact people online and so many online marketing opportunities. Perhaps you simply haven’t considered the vast benefits of making phone calls? Don’t worry – we’re about to look at all the reasons you should be on the phone here so you will be brought up to speed on why you need to involve the phone in your business strategy.
At the same time though you might also be avoiding using the phone out of fear. Perhaps you don’t consider your business to be ‘proper’ or perhaps you just don’t like talking to people on the phone. This is all very understandable, and it’s a common problem, but there’s only one way to get over it – and that’s to get in there and start making the calls now.
Why Should You Be Calling?
So why is it so useful to get on the phone if your business is one that is entirely run online? Well first of all, communicating by phone is simply faster and more effective as a way to get results. Let’s say that you want to trade links with a website. If that website is a small outfit that’s run by one or two people then sure, go ahead and send them a reciprocal link request and they might just agree to swap links. If however that site is a big PR6 site that has offices and a professional registered business name, then chances are they will be simply inundated with such requests. If you send an e-mail that will simply get caught in their spam filter, or it will be ignored or deleted. In order to get noticed you need to take a more direct approach. By calling you make yourself appear more professional and you can’t be ignored. At the same time you get results faster and waste less time.
Don’t just try going for reciprocal link exchanges though, but meanwhile try to get links in other ways. Ring up for instance and tell a news site that your website is newsworthy and that you would like to do an interview. Another benefit of using the phone is that it allows you to contact magazines. Look for niche magazines that you can use to promote yourself and ask them to write a story on your website – you’d be surprised how many will give you a positive response.
You can also get advertisers for your site this way. Companies are used to being phoned by sales executives selling advertising space, so if you can quote them some good statistics in terms of views a day etc, you might be able to get a good deal.
